Basil Tenywa Tuma

Basil Tuma's international story took a sharp turn before it properly began: after coming through Uganda's youth ranks at U17 level, he switched allegiance to Malta, the country whose senior team he would go on to represent. The moment that stands out came on 13 October 2024, away to Moldova in the UEFA Nations League. Sent on as a substitute, Tuma stepped up in stoppage time and converted a penalty to seal a 1–0 win for Malta.

His route to that debut ran through England's academy system rather than Malta's own leagues. Tuma began as a youth player at Fulham before moving to Reading's academy in 2021, and he made his senior bow for Reading in the EFL Cup against Stevenage in August 2022. He has continued to progress through Malta's youth set-up alongside his senior involvement, having also represented the Malta U19 and U21 sides.

Game time at first-team level has come in bursts rather than as a settled run. Reading loaned him to Slough Town for the second half of a season, and he made an immediate impact there, scoring three goals in a dozen appearances. That loan spell closed out his time on Reading's books, with his contract at the club running its course shortly afterwards.

Off the pitch, Tuma has combined his football career with academic study, reading history at King's College London. On the international stage, he has built up caps for Malta's senior side since that breakthrough goal against Moldova.
