About the player

Donovan Pines came through the D.C. United academy before taking the college route, playing for the Maryland Terrapins and winning the 2018 NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Championship. That season brought a string of individual honours, including a place on the College Cup All-Tournament Team and United Soccer Coaches Second Team All-American recognition, on top of First Team All-Big Ten selection.

D.C. United signed him as a Homegrown Player in January 2019, and after a loan spell at Loudoun United FC in the USL Championship, he settled into the first team. He scored his debut MLS goal in a 2–2 draw with Philadelphia Union in October 2020, followed four days later by a goal in a 2–1 victory over FC Cincinnati. Over five seasons with D.C. United he made 93 appearances and scored six goals.

A free transfer took him to Barnsley in League One in January 2024, where he made 31 appearances and scored five goals before moving on to Grazer AK in August 2025 on a one-year deal with a club option to extend.

Pines has also worn the United States shirt. He was part of the squad that won the 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup, making his senior debut as a substitute in a 6–1 win over Martinique before starting the following match against Canada, a game he had to leave early through injury.
