About the player
Ilya Popovich was 14 when he left Uzhhorod for Hungary. He had started in football in 2018 at the local SDYUSHR sports school. In 2020 he moved to the academy of Kisvárda, the club he now plays for in the top flight.
His route back to Kisvárda's first team was not a straight one. After the 2022–23 season in the club's own system, he left in July 2023 for Cigánd SE on a free transfer. He stayed there for a year. In July 2024 he came back to Kisvárda, again on a free transfer.
He made his debut in the Hungarian top flight (NB I) in July 2025. It came a year after his return and two years after he had left to play elsewhere.
His international appearances so far are with Ukraine's youth sides. He has two caps for the Under-21s. The first was a European Under-21 Championship qualifier against Hungary on 31 March 2026, which Hungary won 2–1. The second was a friendly against Japan on 8 June 2026, which Japan won 3–0. He was also in the squad for friendlies against the United States Under-21s in March 2026. He has been called up to the Ukraine Under-20 team as well.
He is right-footed and has yet to be capped by the senior national team.
