About the player
Nathan Gassama made his debut for Mali in a friendly against Jordan on 18 November 2025. Five weeks later he was at the Africa Cup of Nations, where he appeared in the match against Morocco on 26 December. Gassama is French and Malian.
On 7 January 2023 he signed for Slavia Sofia as a free agent, leaving France for Bulgaria.
The move that defined his career came on 5 August 2023, when Baltika Kaliningrad signed the left-footed centre-back for €500,000 on a contract running to June 2028. Baltika won the Russian First League in 2024/25, and Gassama was a member of that title-winning squad. Promotion to the top division put a club that had been outside it in the spotlight, and its players with it.
Gassama's route to the Mali squad ran through a second-tier title in Kaliningrad rather than through the French clubs that developed him. His international career is only weeks old, but it began in a competitive fixture at a continental finals.
