The club was founded in 1971.
Arba Minch's more recent history has been a fight to stay in the top flight rather than to win it. Promotion arrived for the 2011-12 season after the club won the Ethiopian National League, and seven straight seasons in the Premier League followed before relegation in 2017-18. The club returned to the top division for 2021-22.
Kenyan striker Erick Kapaito carried the attack between 2021 and 2023, scoring 11 goals in 43 appearances before moving on. Ugandan forward Brian Aheebwa arrived in 2024 to take up that role.
Awassa Kenema, Negele Arsi Ketema and Hadiya Hossana FC remain the closer, more regular rivals.
