Cegléd's railway depot had its own workers' association before it had a football pitch worth speaking of. Within the first year 153 working railwaymen and 98 of their family members had signed up, and the club has carried the name Vasutas — Railwayman — ever since.

Football turned out to be only one branch of what Vasutas built. Its wrestling section produced Olympic medallists across three generations: József Gál took a medal in 1952, the same Games at which István Szondy won team gold and an individual bronze in the modern pentathlon, and decades later Tamás Lőrincz added an Olympic silver and, in Tokyo, a gold of his own.

On the pitch, Nemzeti Bajnokság III has been the club's natural level, and its title there in 2006–07 was the one that stuck: it sent Vasutas up to NB II for the following season. The same competition had already yielded titles back in 1949, 1950 and 1960, but none carried the same consequence. A run to the last 16 of the Magyar Kupa in 2021–22 remains the club's best showing in the national cup.

Relegation from NB III at the end of 2023–24 dropped the football side into Megyei Bajnokság I, the county championship and Hungary's fourth tier.
