England has never needed to build a national under-21 side from nothing, so when the team was assembled in 1976 it played its first match that December, a goalless draw with Wales at Molineux, and has never settled on a single ground since: matches are spread across stadia up and down the country.
The record at the European Under-21 Championship stretches from 1982 to 2025, four titles in all. The 2023 final was settled by a single goal against Spain; two years later, against Germany, the trophy came down to penalties after extra time had failed to separate the sides. Stuart Pearce could not close that gap when his side lost the 2009 final to Germany 4–0.
The shirt has been a proving ground more than a destination.
