On 19 May 1985, Hong Kong won a World Cup qualifier against China, and riots followed. The "19 May Incident" is still the reference point for the China–Hong Kong rivalry. A World Cup place was the prize that night, and Hong Kong has never won one. The team has never qualified for the finals. Its best ranking is 90th, reached in February 1996, and it fell to 172nd in November 2012.

The Football Association of Hong Kong, China was founded in 1914, but the national side played no FIFA-recognised match until 1954, the year the association joined FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC). Before that, Hong Kong played interport tournaments: against Shanghai from 1908 and against Macau from 1937. It won both several times.

The high point came early. Hong Kong hosted the 1956 Asian Cup and finished third on round-robin standings, so no third-place match was played. It took third again in 1960, although that squad included players who would not be eligible under today's FIFA rules. Since then the ceiling has been the East Asian championship, now the EAFF E-1 Football Championship. Hong Kong has finished fourth there five times: 2003, 2010, 2019, 2022 and 2025.

The 1998 World Cup qualifiers were overshadowed by a match-fixing scandal involving Chan Tsz-Kong.

In 2025 the team played its first match at the new Kai Tak Stadium, against India, in front of 42,570 people. That is the record crowd for the side, in a ground that holds 50,000. Yapp Hung Fai was still in the squad. He won his first cap in 2010 and by 2025 had 112.
