KFC Uerdingen 05

From 1953 the club carried the name of Bayer, after merging with the company's works sports group, and it played as FC Bayer 05 Uerdingen until the sponsor withdrew in 1995/96. Only then did it become Krefelder Fußball-Club Uerdingen 05. The club had been founded in 1905.

Those years belong largely to the Grotenburg-Stadion in the Bockum district. In 1985 Uerdingen won the German Cup by beating Bayern Munich in the final, with Horst Feilzer among the scorers. Karl-Heinz Feldkamp was in charge of the team from 1984 to 1987. Dynamo Dresden came for a Cup Winners' Cup quarter-final and led 3-1 at half-time. Uerdingen won the game 7-3 and the tie 5-2, then went on to the semi-finals, where Atlético Madrid stopped them.

A second-tier title followed in 1992, and the UEFA Intertoto Cup was won four times, in 1988, 1990, 1991 and 1992. Friedhelm Funkel, who is on the list of the club's notable players, managed the side from 1991 to 1996.

Financial insolvency and problems meeting licensing requirements took Uerdingen out of the Regionalliga West in 2021, and the club was in the fifth-tier Oberliga a year later. In January 2025 it filed for insolvency over tax arrears. In April the liquidator ended all activity, and the club has taken legal action over that decision.

Through all of it the club's main rival has been FC Viktoria Köln.
