Twice, the Dutch under-17s reached a European final and found Germany waiting on the other side, in 2009 and again in 2011.

The age group itself only exists because UEFA lowered its youth championship threshold from under-16 to under-17, and the Dutch federation formed this side in 2002 to meet it. Before that the same players had competed at under-16, reaching third place at the 2000 European finals.

There is no home ground in the ordinary sense. The squad trains and is based at the KNVB Campus in Zeist, where the Oranjeplein holds 3,500 for events, but qualifying matches are played wherever the federation schedules them around the country. The runners-up finishes tell their own story of near misses: Turkey in 2005, Germany again in 2009 after extra time, England on penalties in 2014, France by a single goal in 2022.

Of the players who came through this side, Cody Gakpo is the one the 2018 winning squad is remembered by.
