About the player
Gerardo Arteaga made his professional debut for Santos Laguna in October 2016 and stayed with the club through 2020, winning the Clausura 2018 title along the way. That breakthrough took him to Belgium, where KRC Genk signed the left-back for a fee reported between €3.15 million and €3.5 million. He went on to make over 100 appearances for the club and lifted the Belgian Cup in the 2020–21 season, playing the full 90 minutes as Genk beat Standard Liège 2–1 in the final.
In January 2024, Monterrey brought him back to Mexican football for a fee reported between €4.5 million and €6.5 million. The move paid off quickly: Arteaga was named to the Liga MX Best XI for the Clausura 2024 tournament.
His form for club sides has translated into a regular place with the Mexico national team. Arteaga was part of the squad that won the 2023 CONCACAF Gold Cup, though he missed the opening match against Haiti through suspension after picking up a red card in the semi-final of the 2022–23 CONCACAF Nations League. He has also reached the final of the CONCACAF Nations League with Mexico on two occasions, in 2021 and again in 2024.
