About the player
Stopira came through Sporting Praia, winning back-to-back Cape Verdean titles in 2007 and 2008 before leaving for Portugal, where spells at Santa Clara, Deportivo's reserve side and Feirense preceded the move that shaped his career: in 2012 he joined MOL Fehérvár in Hungary and stayed for more than a decade. That length of service, running until 2023, preceded his return home to Cape Verde with Boavista and then moved on to Torreense.
His standing with the national team runs deeper than any of his club spells. A left-footed defender with close to sixty caps and four goals for Cape Verde, he has featured at three Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, in 2015, 2021 and 2023, captaining the side in the most recent of those. The higher point came later still: Stopira was part of the Cape Verde squad that qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the country's first appearance at the tournament.
At Torreense he wears the number two shirt, the latest stop for a defender whose path has taken him from Praia to Portugal, to Hungary, and back again.
