Bietigheim Steelers

The Steelers themselves grew out of SC Kornwestheim, formed on 6 July 1981, and only took the shape recognised today after relocating to Bietigheim in 1988. The "Steelers" tag came later still, borrowed in the early 1990s from a sponsor, Ekatit-Edelstahl, and carried into the club's official name in 2001.

Money and infrastructure have shaped the club's path as much as results on the ice. In 2009, having won the 2. Bundesliga, Bietigheim turned down promotion to the DEL because the finances and the arena were not ready.

René Schoofs holds the club appearance record and Matt McKnight remains its all-time leading scorer, both numbers retired; current captain Alexander Preibisch came up through the academy and has stayed to lead the side he grew up in. Across town, or close enough, sits the club's oldest rival: games against the Heilbronner Falken are billed as the Stahl- und Falkenderby, the Steel and Falcons Derby, a fixture with no love lost between the two.
