Maiden Castle sits on Durham University's sports campus rather than in a football ground proper — a 2,400-capacity venue, 300 of it seated. That arrangement traces back to how the club was put together: in 2014 the university merged its women's football set-up with South Durham & Cestria Girls, a youth side dating to 2006 whose senior team had just won the Northern Combination Women's Football League. The new entity skipped the usual climb through the pyramid and went straight into the inaugural FA Women's Super League 2 season.

The Wildcats, as they're known locally, have stayed in the second tier of the English pyramid since, with a runners-up finish in the Women's Championship in 2020–21 as the high point. Twice, in 2017–18 and 2018–19, they reached the FA Women's Cup quarter-finals, both times running into Chelsea. Beth Hepple holds the club's appearance and goalscoring records.

The derby against Sunderland Women, fought over the River Wear, gives the club its sharpest fixture on a calendar otherwise built around Championship survival. Money trouble caught up with Durham in June 2026, and the takeover that followed — led by South Shields co-owner Geoff Thompson alongside Jason Ye — kept the club going. Willie Kirk took over as head coach the following month.
