Nasarawa United's one national trophy came at the second attempt at the top: they went up on the strength of the 2004 Nigeria Professional Second Division title. The Federation Cup has twice put them one game from a first major honour and twice taken it away on penalties, against FC Ifeanyi Ubah in 2016 and against Bayelsa United in 2021.

The club exists because Nasarawa State's government wanted a team of its own and, in 2003, bought out the assets of Black Stars FC of Gombe to build one.

Silas Nwankwo did more with less time: two seasons up front, one Golden Boot, 19 goals in 2020–21.

The North-Central Derby against Plateau United is the fixture that matters locally, sharpened by the more recent rivalry with Lobi Stars. Games against either now come a division down: relegation has dropped Nasarawa United into the Nigeria National League for 2023/24 and 2024/25.
