John Obi Mikel played his first senior football in Jos before Lyn Fotball and Chelsea ever entered the picture, and he was not the only one: Celestine Babayaro left for Anderlecht at sixteen and won Olympic gold in 1996, and his brother Emmanuel, a goalkeeper, won the same medal.

The club began life as JIB Strikers, named for its original sponsor, the Jos Industrial Brewery. The rebrand in 1991 gave it a name that had belonged, until then, to its own city rivals, Mighty Jets. Matches between them are the Jos derby.

That title took them into the CAF Champions League the following year, and later the CAF Confederation Cup, without progress to show for either. The Nigeria Federation Cup has brought them as far as the semi-finals and no further.

Home games are played on the artificial turf of the New Jos Stadium, a ground that has been under construction, in one form or another, since 1988 and still shares its city with Mighty Jets and with Lobi Stars.

The stadium is listed at 60,000 seats.
