Viktor Konovalenko spent his career in the Torpedo net before the club carried the name Nizhny Novgorod at all — in the winter of 1960–61, the team from the Gorky Automobile Plant took the silver medal in the Soviet League. The factory gave the team its original name, Torpedo Gorky, and its nickname, Avtozavodtsy, the automobile plant workers, a name that stuck even after the city and the club were renamed in 1991.

Little matched that early height for decades. The Vysshaya Liga titles of 2002–03 and 2006–07 brought the club back into the top division, and in the Kontinental Hockey League it has gone no further than a divisional title, taken under the Tarasov Division banner in 2011–12. The Gagarin Cup has never come to Nizhny Novgorod.

What has stayed constant is the fixture against Lokomotiv Yaroslavl, the Volga Derby. Alexander Skvortsov, the club's leading scorer through the Superleague and KHL years, is the name most attached to that later era, much as Konovalenko's is attached to the earlier one.

Torpedo is due to leave Nagorny Arena for the new Volga Arena in September 2026, more than doubling its capacity from 5,500 to around 12,000.
