Dumfries sits in the southwest of Scotland, and its people have called themselves Doonhamers for longer than anyone can pin down. Queen of the South carried the name into football rather than invent something new — the nickname belonged to the town long before it belonged to the club, even if fans in the stands are just as likely to call it Queens, or simply QOS.

The one Scottish Cup final the club has ever reached came in 2008, lost 2-3 to Rangers on 24 May.

The Scottish Challenge Cup ran in a cycle for a while: beaten finalists in 1997/98, winners in 2002/03, beaten again in 2010/11, and winners once more in 2012/13. That same season, Scottish Division Two was won for the third time, the first coming back in 1950/51.

Palmerston Park, the home ground, was rebuilt in time for September 2014 and now holds 8,690, up from 6,722 before the work. Queen of the South play in royal blue and white.

Stranraer supply the closest rivalry, the meetings between the two known as the South West Derby, with no love lost.

Queen of the South formed at a meeting held in Dumfries on 26 March 1919.
