Suchitepéquez

Football arrived in Mazatenango through the department it serves as capital — Suchitepéquez, on Guatemala's Pacific coastal plain, gave the club both its name and its regional standing. CSD Suchitepéquez was founded on 24 November 1960, and for a club representing the south rather than the capital, the nickname El Gigante del Sur stuck as a statement of intent.

That intent showed early. In the 1982–83 season, under Uruguayan coach Julio César Cortés, Suchitepéquez won the Liga Nacional with sixteen wins, four draws and two defeats from 22 matches — the club's first national title. The following year it went further than any Guatemalan side had before: in the CONCACAF Champions' Cup, Suchitepéquez became the first club from the country to beat a Mexican opponent, knocking out Tigres UANL 3-0 after a 1-1 first leg to reach the semi-final.

A second league title took 33 years to arrive. In the 2016 Clausura final, Suchitepéquez lost the first leg to Comunicaciones 1-2, then turned it around at home with a 3-0 win. Between those two championships came a run of cup football: the Copa Gallo in 1993–94, beaten in extra time against Mictlán, the Copa AC Delco in 1997 against Cobán Imperial, and the 1992 Campeón de Campeones, in which Suchitepéquez saw off Municipal 4-2. The reverse came in 1993, when the Recopa CONCACAF group stage brought defeats of 1-6, 0-2 and 0-8.

Home matches are played at Estadio Carlos Salazar Hijo. Its capacity was reduced from 12,000 to 10,000 on safety grounds, and it remains where Mazatenango turns out for the Venados, in white shirts, white shorts and blue socks that long ago earned the club its other name: Los Albiazules.
