Svendborg Rabbits

Johnell Smith put up 39 points against Siroki in the 2008–09 FIBA EuroChallenge. That campaign fell inside a stretch the club itself calls its Golden Era, the years after a 2006 restructuring split off a dedicated elite department with its own board and finances and put the Rabbits name on the shirt for the first time. Between 2007 and 2013 Svendborg reached the Danish Championship final every single season, and more often than not came up short — six silver medals in that span. The exception was 2009–10, when they finally won it, the only national title the club has to its name. The Danish Cup came more easily: a first in 2008, then 2012, 2014, and again in 2022.

The club has flirted with bankruptcy more than once, pulled back each time by sponsors and local backing rather than any cushion of its own. Home games are played at Rise Sparekasse Arena, known locally as Kaninhulen — the rabbit hole — a tight, 1,922-seat venue that suits a club built more on nerve than on financial muscle. There is no fixed rival with the weight of history behind it; Bakken Bears, the dominant force in Danish basketball, is the team Svendborg measures itself against most often, alongside regular meetings with Horsens IC and Randers Cimbria.

The Rabbits stepped outside domestic basketball again in 2023–24, joining the European North Basketball League. It is a smaller stage than the EuroChallenge years, but for a club that traces its basketball roots back to 1951, before Svendborg Basketball Club even existed as its own entity, staying in the game has usually mattered more than the size of the stage.
