Tolzer Lowen

Winter sport in Bad Tölz went back to 1924, but it took another four years for the town's club to form a dedicated ice hockey department. The team that plays now under the name Tölzer Löwen split off as a separate company in 2002, leaving the founding club to its other winter sports.

The Löwen were among the founding members of the Eishockey-Bundesliga in 1958 and held their place in the top flight until 1976. They won national championships in 1962 and 1966, both settled not by a single final but by a round-robin meisterrunde in which Bad Tölz finished above EV Füssen.

Since then the club has lived mostly in the lower divisions. An Oberliga South championship in 2012 should have sent them to the second-tier league, but the club could not meet the required one-million-euro budget and stayed put. Promotions did go through in 2008 and again in 2017, after further Oberliga South titles, though neither stay in the second division lasted: insolvency proceedings in February 2009 triggered automatic relegation, and the club came back down again after the 2021/22 season.

Yasin Ehliz, Leonhard Pföderl, Konrad Abeltshauser and Maximilian Kammerer all passed through the Bad Tölz youth setup before playing in the DEL and for the German national team. Matches against TEV Miesbach carry the weight of a local derby, played out in front of a crowd the Hacker-Pschorr-Arena can hold up to 4,300 for.

Bad Tölz now competes in the Oberliga.
