The Traktor Ice Arena seats 7,500, modest by Kontinental Hockey League standards, and stands where the club spent most of its history somewhere else: from 1967 the team played at the Yunost Sport Palace and only moved into the current building in 2009. It carries the name of Valery Belousov, who remains the club's all-time leading scorer and later coached the side — a rare case of a rink named for someone who first made his mark on its ice rather than behind the bench.

Traktor grew out of the Chelyabinsk Tractor Plant, and the plant's imprint outlasted several changes of identity: the club played as Dzerzhinets from 1948, then Avangard from 1954, before settling on Traktor in 1958. The black-and-white colours and the "White Bears" nickname date from that settled period.

The club has never lifted the Gagarin Cup. It came closest in 2012–13, losing the final to Dynamo Moscow, and again in 2024–25, when Avangard Omsk denied it. Between those two finals sits a long-standing absence of Soviet-era silverware too — bronze in 1976–77 is as high as it reached in the old championship, and a Superleague bronze followed in 1993–94. The nearest thing to a title is the Continental Cup, awarded for the best regular-season record, won in 2011–12.

What Chelyabinsk hockey has produced more reliably than trophies is players. Sergei Makarov and Vyacheslav Bykov came through the club in its Soviet pomp; more recently the academy has sent Evgeny Kuznetsov and Valeri Nichushkin into the game's top ranks. The fiercest test of the current side still comes from across the Urals, in the derby against Metallurg Magnitogorsk, a fixture that carries more weight locally than anything else on the calendar. Traktor now returns to that rivalry, and to the league, still chasing the one final it has yet to win.
