Újpest TE

The ice hockey section did not begin that way. Set up in 1930 within the wider Újpesti Torna Egylet sports club, it folded after two seasons for lack of money and a rink to play on. Its return came only in 1955, and not under its own name: state reorganisation of Hungarian sport relaunched it as Budapesti Dózsa SE. The 1956 revolution brought a brief reversion to Újpesti TE, then from 1957 the club skated as Újpesti Dózsa SC for over three decades, waiting until the collapse of communism to reclaim the name it carries now.

Between those two identities sat the trophies: thirteen Hungarian League championships, the last string of them won through the 1980s, and nine Hungarian Cups. Earlier still came five Peace Cups in the late 1950s and early 1960s, won under the Dózsa name but counted among UTE's own honours today.

Games against Ferencvárosi TC still draw the city's attention as the North Pest derby, played out now at the Megyeri úti jégcsarnok, a 2,200-seat rink with room for 300 travelling fans. The club has not been short of a home since.
