Ziar nad Hronom

There is no old enemy waiting across the Hron valley for HK MŠK Indian Žiar nad Hronom. HKM Zvolen, the Extraliga side whose farm arrangement keeps the roster stocked, is a partner rather than a foe. What the club has instead is a name borrowed from a mascot, the Indians. That arrival came in 2021, when the Slovak Ice Hockey Federation widened the 1. Liga from ten clubs to twelve and let MŠK Žiar nad Hronom in on administrative grounds rather than promotion earned on ice. A ninth-place finish followed in that first season. The next one went further: a run to the semifinals in 2022/23, ended by Vlci Žilina. By 2024/25 the club had climbed to second in the regular season before falling in the quarterfinals, a campaign lifted by Martin Jakúbek, the league's most productive scorer that year with 63 points in 41 games and a nephew of Pavol Demitra. The club plays in burgundy and beige at the Slovalco Aréna. No national title sits in the cabinet. What the current name and structure inherited instead was the ground and standing of TJ Strojár, the club that wore the Žiar nad Hronom jersey through its various guises, including a spell as MŠK Žiar nad Hronom in the 2000s, before the present entity was set up in 2014. Behind all of it sits 1952, when a handful of local enthusiasts in the town put together a hockey team.
