The old Munich rink sat in the shadow of a different kind of history. Before the great Olympias and the modern ice palaces, there was this place on Galleriestrasse, a roof over a patch of artificial ice. It was not a grand arena; the capacity was around 1,500, a number that suggests a room full of people rather than a festival.

What remains of it is a matter of silence. The old Grünwalder Stadion has its own stories, but this one is no longer there. The exact year it closed is not found. It simply ceased to exist, leaving only the date 1920 and the name Unsöld'sche Kunsteisbahn behind.

The Munich Ice Palace was a small, early fixture in German hockey. It hosted the 1920 championship and a recorded crowd of 1,500 on a winter evening in 1932. It has been gone for some time now.
