Thomas Domenig Stadion

Chur, Switzerland

Formerly: Hallenstadion Obere Au, Hallenstadion Chur

The ground is not for football, and that is usually the first thing a visitor notices. It is an indoor ice hockey arena, the only one of its kind in the city of Chur. The surface is artificial ice, refrigerated and ready for a hockey match, though the roof has also sheltered a handball Supercup and is scheduled to host a music festival in the future.

The building was completed in 1981 by Thomas Domenig, the local architect who lived to see his creation become public property. The City of Chur bought the venue in March 2017 for 3 million Swiss francs. The original design holds 6,500, but the number of seats dropped to 2,800 for a time; the renovations pushed it back to 3,500. The record for a match inside the building belongs to floorball, not hockey: 2,800 fans watched a playoff between EHC Chur and Alligator Malans on March 16, 2019.

The name changed on December 23, 2017, when the city put up a plaque and called it the Thomas Domenig Stadion. Before that it was the Hallenstadion Chur, or the Hallenstadion Obere Au, named after the district where the Grossbruggerweg runs.
