About

The Lotto Volley League Women (officially the Belgian Volley League Women or Liga A) stands as the premier professional women's volleyball competition in Belgium. Founded in 1950, the tournament operates under a unique governance structure managed by the Lotto Volley League, a joint association linking Volley Belgium and the Royal Belgian Volleyball Federation (FRBVB/KBVBV). This unified model distinguishes the domestic circuit from many other European leagues, where separate federations typically oversee male and female divisions.

The season unfolds through a rigorous regular phase where ten clubs contest home and away fixtures. The competitive landscape then fractures into two distinct trajectories. The upper echelon enters the Championship Play-offs, a mini-league format where the top four sides carry bonus points into the final stretch. These points are distributed based on regular-season standing, with first place securing six points, second place four, third two, and fourth none. The two leaders of this group advance to a best-of-three finals series to determine the national champion.

Simultaneously, teams ranked fifth through eighth engage in a separate mini-league battle for European qualification spots, specifically targeting the CEV Challenge Cup. The bottom two sides face the threat of relegation to Nationale 1, the second tier of Belgian volleyball. The competition has seen various sponsorship titles, including the Ethias Volley League and the EuroMillions Volley League, before adopting its current name in the 2022–23 season.

Historical dominance has shifted over decades. Asterix-Avo Beveren currently holds the record for the most titles, with eighteen victories as of the 2024–25 season. This tally surpasses the previous record held by VC Oostende (Hermes Volley Oostende), which claims thirteen championships, predominantly won during the 1970s and 1980s. Recent winners include VDK Gent Dames, who secured the crown in 2021–22. The league's structure ensures that every match carries weight, whether for glory or survival.
