About

The Swiss Women's Volleyball Nationalliga A (NLA) is the top-tier professional volleyball league in Switzerland, organized by the national governing body Swiss Volley. The competition began in the 1958–1959 season, coinciding with the establishment of the national governing body. It currently consists of ten teams, a size that distinguishes it from the men's equivalent, which typically features fewer clubs.

The season follows a double round-robin regular season format where each team plays every other side twice, home and away. The top eight teams from the regular standings advance to the playoffs. These knockout stages feature quarterfinals played as best-of-three series, while the semifinals and final are decided over best-of-five matches. The bottom two teams enter a relegation phase, contesting a best-of-three series against each other. The loser of that tie then faces the winner of the Nationalliga B (NLB) promotion playoffs in a challenge match to determine the final relegation spot. Promotion and relegation are not automatic but are decided through these annual playoff series, usually involving one team moving between the divisions.

Historically, SC Uni Basel Volleyball is the most successful club with 22 titles, dominating the early decades with 19 consecutive championships from 1963 to 1982. In the modern era, Voléro Zürich held dominance with 12 titles, including a streak of 13 consecutive wins from 2004 to 2018. Since 2019, Viteos Neuchâtel UC (NUC) has emerged as the leading force, winning the titles in 2018–19, 2020–21, 2021–22, 2022–23, and 2023–24. The league is distinct from the Swiss Volley Cup, a knockout tournament open to all levels, and the Swiss Super Cup, a match between the NLA champion and Cup winner.
