The Nationalliga A is the top-tier professional volleyball competition in Switzerland, officially known as the Swiss Men's Volleyball League. Organised by Swiss Volley, the competition sits at the apex of the national pyramid and operates under the direct governance of the governing body. Founded in 1957, the league follows a format distinct from many top European counterparts, functioning as a semi-professional circuit where clubs rely heavily on local sponsors and volunteer work rather than large corporate budgets.
The current season features nine teams, an expansion from the usual eight due to relaxed promotion conditions. Clubs play each other twice in a double round-robin regular season, with points awarded based on the margin of victory. The top eight teams advance to the playoffs, which consist of best-of-five series in the quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals. The third-place match is decided in a single game between the losing semifinalists.
Promotion and relegation between the NLA and the second-tier Nationalliga B are determined through a playoff system known as the "Barrage." The bottom-placed NLA teams face the top NLB teams in these series, though the number of spots involved can vary. In the current campaign, no relegation matches were held because no NLB club wished to promote, allowing the NLA to expand without a drop.
EOS Lausanne is the most successful club with 12 titles, followed by Servette VB with 10, and Volley Näfels with 9. The current defending champions are TV Amriswil, who also hold six titles. The NLA winner is crowned Swiss Champion and qualifies for European competitions, while the winner of the separate Swiss Volley Cup earns a secondary domestic title. Both winners qualify for the Swiss Supercup; if one team wins both, the NLA runner-up takes the Cup winner's spot.
The league operates without a long-term title sponsor for the competition itself, although individual clubs have sponsors such as Lindaren for Amriswil and Vitéos for Neuchâtel. Strategic stability initiatives like "Strategie NLA 2028" manage format decisions.
