About
The FIVB Volleyball Girls' U17 World Championship is an international tournament for national teams. Approved by the FIVB Volleyball Council in 2022, the inaugural edition took place in 2024 in Lima, Peru. This event serves as a distinct category for players under the age of 17, separate from the previous U18/U19 World Championships which were restructured. It differs from other FIVB youth events by its specific age cutoff, filling a gap between U15 and U20 categories in the FIVB calendar.
The 2026 edition features 24 teams, an expansion from the 16 teams in the first season. Teams are divided into four pools of six. The top four teams from each pool advance to the Round of 16 in a single-elimination bracket. The bottom two teams from each pool enter a separate playoff bracket for places 17–24. Additional play-offs determine rankings for places 9–16. The tournament is held biennially.
Qualification is based on performance in continental championships. For the 2026 edition, spots were allocated as follows: AVC received six spots, CEV seven, NORCECA four, CSV four, and CAVB three. The host nation receives an automatic berth. The winners of the editions held so far are China and the United States. China won the 2024 title by defeating Japan, while the United States won their first title in 2026 by defeating Turkey.
There is no promotion or relegation system, as the tournament is a global event for national teams rather than a domestic league. Teams progress by age eligibility, moving from U17 to U20 or senior categories. The tournament does not currently have a commercial title sponsor in its official name, branded simply as the FIVB Volleyball Girls' U17 World Championship.
