Eintracht Trier hosted RB Leipzig at the Mosel Stadium on Friday afternoon, and the visitors made short work of the Round of 64 tie. Leipzig won 6-0, with goals from Brajan Gruda, Willi Orbán, Ridle Baku twice, Conrad Harder, Antonio Nusa and Ezechiel Banzuzi. The result was never in doubt after the first ten minutes, when Gruda and Orbán struck inside two minutes of each other.
Leipzig should have too much for them in this kind of fixture, and they proved it immediately. Trier dug in for the opening quarter-hour but could not contain the pressure.
And here's the thing about matches like this — the twentieth minute tells you everything. There was nothing on the scoresheet, but you could see Trier's confidence draining away. Leipzig were simply passing the ball around, looking for openings that would not come for some time. To be fair, Trier's defensive shape was compact, but it was only a matter of time.
Ridle Baku added two more before half-time, completing his brace in stoppage time. The visitors came out for the second half with the same intent, and Conrad Harder made it four after an hour. Antonio Nusa and Ezechiel Banzuzi rounded off the scoring in the final minutes.
The numbers tell the story plainly. Leipzig held 72 per cent possession and completed 556 passes compared to Trier's 185. The visitors registered 11 shots on target with an expected goals figure of 4.51, while Trier managed just two shots on target and 0.62 expected goals. Five big chances were created by Leipzig against one for the hosts.
For Trier, this was a harsh lesson in the gap between the divisions. The hosts had won 1-0 against Alemannia Aachen two weeks ago, but this was a different proposition entirely. Leipzig's defeat of Bayern in their last outing showed they are already operating at a higher level.
