Match report

Charlotte Turn Montreal's Dominance On Its Head

Montreal Impact lost 1:2 to Charlotte at Saputo Stadium in the Major League Soccer regular season. The hosts controlled the tempo and territory but could not convert their superiority into a result. Charlotte took the lead twice and held it, despite being outplayed for long spells.

Daniel Rios gave Montreal the advantage in the 34th minute with a simple finish. To be fair, the goal came from sustained pressure — the home side had 11 corners by then and were pinning Charlotte back. But the visitors responded within three minutes. Liel Abada equalised in the 37th, and the momentum shifted without warning.

The second half saw both managers reshuffle. Montreal brought on Dante Sealy in the 64th and Brayan Ceballos in the 75th, trying to find a winner. Charlotte made three changes in quick succession — Wikelman Carmona, Luca De La Torre, and Liel Abada off in the 65th through 68th minutes. And here's the thing: Abada had scored, so his removal was tactical, not punitive.

Idan Toklomati Jorno turned the tie over in the 81st minute. The goal came from a rare Charlotte attack — they had created three big chances overall, against Montreal's two. The home side had 25 shots, five on target, but the visitors needed only four shots on target to score twice. Expected goals told the same story: 1:32 for Montreal, 1:46 for Charlotte.

We had called this one earlier. Charlotte win at 39% confidence. The form supports it — the visitors had won two and drawn one in their last five, while Montreal's run included that 1:7 defeat to Miami. By then, Montreal were 15th with 21 points, Charlotte fifth with 39. The gap between them was not just in the table.

Montreal finished with 58% possession, 562 passes, 33 crosses. Charlotte made 414 passes, 10 crosses, but 40 clearances. The home side worked the ball into the final third 175 times; Charlotte managed 68. Numbers do not lie, but they do not tell the whole story either. Three goals decided this, and Montreal had more chances but fewer of them counted.
