Match Report
Nanjing City and Heilongjiang Lava Spring played out a 1:1 draw in League One's Regular Season round 19 on Saturday. Erikys opened the scoring for the hosts in the thirty-fifth minute before J. Ngom Mbekeli equalised for the visitors late on. By then the match had settled into a rhythm neither side could break.
Heilongjiang came out stronger after the interval. Zhao Chengle and Yang He came on together at the break, and the visitors pushed forward. Nanjing City responded with their own changes — Meng Zhen and Zhai Zhaoyu replaced each other around the hour mark. And here's the thing about these games: the tactical adjustments matter more than possession.
Nanjing City had 37 per cent possession but managed only one shot on target all afternoon. Eight shots off target tells you they were working the ball around but couldn't find the right channel. Heilongjiang dominated possession at 63 per cent yet their two shots on target produced just one goal. To be fair they created as many big chances as the hosts — one each — but the finishing was never quite sharp enough.
The match was physical. Four yellow cards came in quick succession between the forty-ninth and sixty-first minutes: Hu Jiajin, Bruno Baio, Li Zhi and Meng Zhen. Nanjing City committed 24 fouls compared to the visitors' 14. The statistics show a team that lost their man repeatedly rather than a side that couldn't pass.
Both sides had identical numbers in aerial duels — 36 apiece — which tells you something about where the battle was fought. Nanjing City won 14 of theirs, Heilongjiang 22. The hosts made 80 attacks to the visitors' 82, but the difference was in where those attacks went. By then the result was already written.
Nanjing City remain thirteenth with 21 points from 21 matches. Heilongjiang sit twelfth, one point ahead after their 22 points. The hosts have now drawn three of their last five — 1:1 against Nantong Zhiyun and Yanbian Longding before that 1:2 loss to Changchun Yatai. And here's the thing about this league: points come in clusters, not evenly.
