Paderborn 07 saw off Phoenix Lübeck 4-2 in the German Cup's Round of 64 at Stadion Flugplatz on Saturday. The visitors took the lead after an own goal and held on despite an early setback that threatened to derail their evening.
Jano Ter-Horst put Lübeck ahead in the twenty-second minute, but Paderborn responded quickly. Santiago Castañeda equalised just before half-time, and Moritz Kretzer restored the visitors' advantage two minutes later. By then the momentum had shifted, and Paderborn never looked back.
Stefano Marino extended the lead in the sixty-first minute before Gabriel Vidović added a fourth in the seventy-first. Tjark Lasse Scheller's own goal in the seventy-fifth minute confirmed the result, and Lübeck's late rally found no answer.
Paderborn dominated possession at 63 per cent and created more clear-cut opportunities, registering 2.71 expected goals compared to Lübeck's 1.21. The visitors also recorded 10 shots on target against 7, though shot accuracy worked in Lübeck's favour — they converted their chances when it mattered.
Lübeck made three substitutions at the break, bringing on Kilian Skolik, Albert Millgramm and Raphael Obermair, but the changes could not shift the balance. Paderborn brought on both Marino and Kretzer in the seventy-second minute, a safe pair of hands to see out the game.
The result means Paderborn advance to the next round, while Lübeck's cup campaign ends here. They had started brightly enough, but the visitors' control in midfield and their ability to punish missed chances proved decisive.
