Podronje secured a two-nil win against Liptovsky Mikulas in the eighth round of the Second League on Friday evening. The hosts' efficiency on the day proved decisive, with two goals separating the sides at the final whistle. It was a result that kept Podronje in third place, four points clear of the visitors who sit ninth.
The breakthrough came in the 60th minute when J. Port found the back of the net. And here's the thing about that goal — Podronje had been patient, working the ball into areas where Liptovsky's defence looked uncomfortable. M. Dumbuya doubled the lead ten minutes later, and by then the visitors were chasing shadows across the pitch.
Liptovsky's manager tried to shift the game at the 64th minute, bringing on E. Okonji. To be fair, the visitors had dominated possession at 51 per cent, but that statistic meant little when there were zero shots on target all evening. Podronje registered seven on target to their opponents' empty tally, and it was those moments that separated the teams.
The yellow cards told a story of mounting frustration. Podronje's player went off the board at the 36th minute, while S. Chlepko collected his caution at the 49th, just before Port's goal. A further booking for Podronje at 81 and one for Liptovsky at 90 rounded out the disciplinary record, three for the visitors against one for the hosts.
Podronje's recent form suggests this was a natural progression. They had won three of their last five league matches, including victories over Lokomotiv Zvolen and Prievidza, before a setback against Galanta. Liptovsky, meanwhile, had drawn three of seven games and were yet to find consistency away from home.
The standings now show Podronje on 13 points from seven games, with four wins, one draw and two defeats. Liptovsky remain on nine points with two victories and three draws. The gap between them is unlikely to close quickly, and the visitors will need to find more than possession to climb away from the bottom half.
