SFK 2000 Sarajevo beat Racing 4-1 in the second qualifying round of the UEFA Women's Champions League on Friday. They played at home in Sarajevo and took a commanding lead before the interval. The result means they will advance to the next stage of the competition.
And here's the thing — they didn't wait long to open the scoring. D. Spasojevic converted a penalty in the thirty-eighth minute, then P. Pezelj doubled the advantage two minutes later. V. Terzic added a third just before the break with a goal in the forty-fifth minute plus two. Racing had no answer to that kind of start.
By then Racing needed to change something, and they made a substitution in the forty-sixth minute. But the damage was done. K. Dos Santos pulled one back in the fiftieth minute, giving the visitors hope, only for Spasojevic to strike again in the sixty-second. That was her second of the afternoon.
From there the match settled into a rhythm of substitutions on both sides. A. Zukic came on in the sixtieth minute, followed by V. Terzic in the sixty-first. M. Estevez Garcia, A. S. Machado, T. Harrison and C. Corplet all entered the game in the second half. The visitors tried to find their feet but couldn't get close to the deficit.
For Sarajevo this is a significant step. They had lost their last three matches in all competitions, including a 2-3 defeat to PSV Eindhoven on Wednesday night. Racing meanwhile had lost four of their last five, with only a 2-1 win over Riga standing out. The result on Friday ends a difficult run for the hosts and puts them firmly in control of their European campaign.
