Waldhof Mannheim took all three points against Fortuna Düsseldorf with a 2-1 win in the opening round of the 3. Liga season. The result keeps both sides level on four points after four games each, though Waldhof sit one place above their visitors in the table. It was a match decided by moments rather than dominance, and to be fair that is how many of these fixtures play out.
Thill opened the scoring in the eighteenth minute, giving the hosts an early advantage they would not relinquish. Fortuna responded through Ulbricht forty-eight minutes in, but Schleusener restored the lead just eight minutes later. The home side then defended their margin well, even if possession never quite swung their way.
Cards began to accumulate as the game tightened. Heintz and Amaniampong picked up bookings before half-time, while the second half saw five more yellow cards between the two sides. Mendes, Bouchama, Paulina, Muteba NTumba, Boyd and Meiser all found themselves cautioned at various stages, which is typical when a match goes searching for a winner.
Substitutions came in waves from both benches. Hottmann, Thill, Benger, Mendes, Bouchama, Asallari and others were brought on as managers looked for fresh legs. By then the game had settled into a rhythm where each side took turns pressing forward, and the home side kept their heads when it mattered most.
The statistics tell an interesting story. Waldhof registered 77 attacks compared to Fortuna's 70, and their shot accuracy of 43 per cent was notably better than the visitors' 38. Yet Fortuna enjoyed 56 per cent possession and still found themselves trailing. Six shots on target for Waldhof against three for the away side shows who took their chances.
Both teams now share the same point tally, but the gap between fifteenth and sixteenth place is narrow. Fortuna's recent form included a heavy 12-1 victory earlier in pre-season, while Waldhof have shown they can compete at this level. The result extends neither side's unbeaten run, but it gives the home side a psychological edge going forward.
