Bergson arrived at Johor Darul Ta'zim in 2021 on a loan deal worth US$100,000, with a purchase option of US$400,000 that the club exercised in May that year to make the move permanent. The Brazilian, who also holds Malaysian citizenship, has since become JDT's all-time top scorer, with 196 goals in 197 appearances, and the leading scorer in the history of the Malaysia Super League, with more than 130 goals in the competition.

Before his move to Malaysia, Bergson passed through Fortaleza, Ceará, Athletico Paranaense, Paysandu and Náutico. Earlier still, his registration belonged to Grêmio for the better part of seven years, though he spent most of that period out on loan, turning out for clubs as far apart as Suwon Samsung Bluewings in South Korea and Busan I'Park, alongside stops at Vila Nova, Ypiranga, Braga B, Juventude, Portuguesa and Chapecoense. He had already won the Campeonato Brasileiro Sub-20 twice with Grêmio's youth side, in 2008 and 2009.

In 2022 he finished among the world's top five scorers, with 46 goals in 36 matches, and that same year scored the club's first hat-trick in the AFC Champions League, against Guangzhou.
