About the player

Jean-Pierre Rhyner was born in Zurich and came through the Grasshopper academy, making his senior debut for the club and going on to make 35 league appearances and score twice before a loan spell at Schaffhausen in the Challenge League, where he added a further 26 appearances and 2 goals. In 2019 he moved to Spain to join Cádiz, and he was part of the Cádiz squad that finished as runners-up in the Segunda División in 2019–20, a result that sent the club up to La Liga for the first time in its history, with Rhyner making eight league appearances and scoring in that campaign. Loan spells at Cartagena and then at Dutch side Emmen followed, before a free transfer took him to Greece, where he made 15 appearances and scored twice for Volos NFC.

Rhyner returned to Switzerland in 2022 for a second spell at Schaffhausen, this time on a permanent deal, and made 41 appearances there over two seasons. He is a left-footed centre-back, and although he came through the Swiss youth ranks — winning six caps at U20 level and five at U21 level for Switzerland — he switched his international allegiance to Peru, gaining FIFA approval for the change in 2020 after having already represented Peru's U20 side. He was called up to the senior Peru squad by Ricardo Gareca in October 2020 but has yet to win his first senior cap.

He joined Vizela on a free transfer in July 2024 and wears number 4 for the Portuguese club. His performances there were enough to convince Vizela to renew his contract, and in August 2025 he renewed his contract until June 2027.
