About the player
Cape Verdean, born in Ribeira Grande de Santiago, João Paulino Moreira Fernandes plays as a left winger for Oţelul Galaţi, though he is comfortable enough on the right or through the middle. He started out at Tchadense before joining Sporting Praia, where he won the Taça Nacional de Cabo Verde in 2018. From there his path ran through Portugal, with spells at Maria da Fonte, Leça and Salgueiros, then a second stint at Leça, all on free transfers.
His move abroad came in July 2023, when he signed for Zimbru Chişinău as a free agent. Across two seasons he made 27 appearances and scored 13 goals, and reached two finals with the club, finishing runner-up in both the Cupa Moldovei and the Moldovan Super Liga in 2023–24. In January 2025 he joined Politehnica Iaşi on another free transfer, then went out on loan to Ordabasy in Kazakhstan two months later, where he again finished on the losing side of a cup final, this time in the Kazakhstan Cup.
He returned to Romania in June 2026, signing for Oţelul Galaţi on a free transfer on a two-year deal. He wasted little time making an impact: on his competitive debut in the 2026–2027 Liga I season, against UTA Arad, he scored a goal and set up another. At youth international level, he was capped twice by Cape Verde's under-19 side in 2019, scoring once.
