About the player
Kai Harley Wagner spent 2026 crossing the Atlantic twice. The left-back joined Birmingham City on 2 January and was back with Philadelphia Union by 17 July.
At Philadelphia, Wagner became a regular fixture on the left side of defence and picked up team and individual recognition to match. He was part of Union squads that won the MLS Supporters' Shield for the best regular-season record in 2020 and again in 2025. He was selected for the MLS All-Star Game three times, in 2021, 2022 and 2025, and was named to the league's Best XI in 2022 and 2025. In the voting for MLS Defender of the Year, he finished as runner-up in 2022 and third in 2025.
His move to Birmingham in January 2026 offered a rare test in English football, but it did not last long. By the middle of the year he was back in Chester, Pennsylvania.
