Momodou Lamin Sonko

Momodou Sonko moved from Västra Frölunda IF's youth ranks to BK Häcken's academy in 2020, five years after being invited to a trial at Liverpool as a boy in Gothenburg. He signed his first professional contract with Häcken in May 2022 and made his senior debut that August. By 2023 he had become a regular starter and was named the Allsvenskan Young Player of the Year.

He was part of the Häcken squad that won the 2022 Allsvenskan title, the club's first-ever league championship, and added the Svenska Cupen the following season.

In January 2024, Sonko transferred to KAA Gent in the Belgian Pro League on a contract until 2028. The fee, in the region of €8 million and potentially rising to €10 million with bonuses, broke Gent's club record for a signing and stood as Häcken's most expensive sale in their history.

Sonko has represented Sweden at every youth level. He collected six caps for the under-17s, then eight caps and two goals for the under-19s. Since 2024 he has featured for the under-21s, for whom he has scored three goals in 15 appearances. Although he is of Gambian descent, he has not featured for Gambia's senior side.
