The **Jupiler Pro League** operates as the apex of Belgian football, sitting above the Challenger Pro League. Founded in 1895, the competition has remained a central fixture in the country's sporting landscape for over a century. While the Dutch Eredivisie and French Ligue 1 rely on direct standings or knockout formats, the Belgian league is distinguished by its unique historical use of a playoff system and a point-halving mechanism.
Managed by the Pro League since 2008, the structure ensures that the regular season does not solely determine the ultimate outcome. The current format divides the top six teams into Championship Play-off I, where they compete for the title and European qualification using half their accumulated points. This differs significantly from the immediate relegation battles faced by the bottom four clubs, who enter a separate group to avoid dropping to the second tier. The system creates a high-stakes environment for every match, rather than allowing early-season leaders to coast towards a victory.
Financially, the competition benefits from long-term stability provided by the Jupiler sponsorship, which has defined the brand since 1994. This contrasts with the more volatile sponsorship histories often seen in neighbouring regions. The league currently comprises 16 clubs, including major entities like Club Brugge, Anderlecht, and Genk. Anderlecht holds the record for the most titles with 34, while Club Brugge follows closely with 20 victories.
Starting in the 2026–27 season, the league will undergo significant changes. The number of teams will expand to 18, and the complex playoff system will be abolished in favour of a standard double round-robin. This shift aims to simplify the competition, though it marks the end of a distinctive era in Belgian football. The transition will alter how the champion is decided, moving away from the mini-league concept that has characterised the sport in Belgium for decades.
