When Genk lifted the title in 2019, it was Felice Mazzu's side doing it. Two mining-town sides from the same corner of Limburg, Winterslag and Thor Waterschei, merged on 1 July 1988, and the new club took Winterslag's old registration number and its place in the top flight.

Genk have worn it to four league titles, in 1999, 2002, 2011 and 2019, spaced out unevenly enough that each one arrived after a different rebuild rather than as part of one long run.

They play now at the Cegeka Arena, a ground that has changed sponsors' names twice — Cristal Arena, then Luminus Arena, then Cegeka from August 2021 — without ever changing address. It holds 23,718 for domestic football, trimmed to 21,500 when UEFA's seating-only rules apply for European nights, which Genk have needed often enough that the smaller number matters.

The most recent Belgian Cup, in 2020-21, was the club's fifth, and it arrived in the same year as a Belgian Super Cup — the same season, two trophies, the kind of pairing that has happened for Genk before and likely will again.
