Precious Ugwu

Precious Ugwu spent a decade in Ajax's academy before playing a single minute for anyone else. He arrived from local side OFC Oostzaan in 2014 and worked his way through the Amsterdam club's youth ranks for ten years, a stretch long enough that most assumed a path to the first team, or at least Jong Ajax, would eventually open up.

It partly did. Ugwu broke into Jong Ajax's Eerste Divisie side in February 2024, making four appearances that season before a fuller role followed in 2024/25: 27 matches and a goal. But regular football with the senior squad never materialised, and when his contract ran out in the summer of 2025, he chose not to stay and fight for it. He joined FC Volendam instead, signing a three-year deal, and was blunt about the reasoning behind the move: Ajax, he said, could not offer him the chance to keep developing.

The switch made a spare, no-transfer-fee exit from one of the country's biggest academies into a proper opportunity elsewhere, and it drew attention precisely because it ran against the usual script of academy graduates waiting out their chances. At Volendam, the 192cm right-footed defender now wears the number two shirt.

International recognition has come at youth level. Ugwu has featured for the Netherlands' under-19 side, collecting two goals in twelve appearances, and was part of the squad that won the 2025 European Under-19 Championship.

Born in Filderstadt, Germany, Ugwu holds dual Dutch and German nationality.
