About the player
Born in Otaru, Hokkaido, he came up through Zenibako SSS and the Hokkaido Consadole Sapporo youth set-up before enrolling at Meiji University, and it was while still a student there that Tokyo Verdy signed him as a designated special player in 2021, converting him to a permanent contract for the 2022 season.
Kato's time at Tokyo Verdy ended on a high. Across 61 appearances and five goals, he was part of the side that finished third in the J2 League in 2023 and then won the promotion play-offs, sending Verdy back into the J1 League after fifteen years away from the top flight, and in December 2023 he moved to Yokohama F. Marinos ahead of the 2024 season on an undisclosed fee.
The club finished ninth in the J1 League that year but went further in the cup competitions, reaching the semi-finals of both the Emperor's Cup and the J.League Cup. Reports indicated his deal was due to end in January 2026, after which he agreed to join Kyoto Sanga on a free transfer.
