About the player
René Renner's route to the top of Austrian football went through amateur football in Upper Austria. He started out at SV Wallern, then moved between ASKÖ Donau Linz, ASKÖ SV Viktoria Marchtrenk and Union St. Florian before a spell back at Wallern.
A move to FC Blau-Weiß Linz in 2016 was followed a year later by a transfer to SV Mattersburg, and in July 2019 LASK signed him for a fee of €0.5 million. He stayed at LASK for five seasons, reaching the Austrian Cup final in 2020–21, though LASK lost that match to Red Bull Salzburg.
The most unusual turn of his career came in March 2025, when he left Austria for Thailand to join Buriram United, brought in specifically to strengthen the squad for the AFC Champions League Elite. He made his debut for the club in the quarter-final against Al-Ahli in April 2025, and went on to win both the Thai League 1 title and the ASEAN Club Championship with Buriram before leaving the club again in June 2025.
He returned to Austria on 1 July 2025, signing for Wolfsberger AC on a free transfer with a contract until 2027. Renner has represented Austria at youth level, including the U21 side, but has not been capped by the senior national team.
