About the player
Sil van der Wegen came through the Amsterdam academy of AFC before switching to the FC Utrecht youth setup, where he continued his development through the age ranks. He joined the reserve side, Jong Utrecht, making 94 appearances and scoring seven goals in the Eerste Divisie during his time with the team. He signed his first professional contract with FC Utrecht, formalising the progress he had made through the club's academy.
A right-footed defender, van der Wegen is also comfortable further forward, with some assessments of his game placing him as a central midfielder rather than purely at the back, when he was called up by the Netherlands at Under-17 level and scored in a match against Poland.
Van der Wegen has not added further youth international caps beyond that Under-17 involvement, nor has he been capped at senior level.
