The championships came in 1995, 1996, 1997, 1999, then again in 2017 and 2022, telling you what Al-Markhiya have mostly had to be good at: getting themselves back up.

They started out under a different name and only became Al-Markhiya in 2004, taking the identity of the Doha district they play for. Locally they are known as Al-Hazm, the Firm, a name pulled from the Hazm Al-Markhiya neighbourhood rather than chosen for effect.

The ground problem never really went away. Al-Markhiya Stadium holds 450 people, so on the days that matter the club packs up and plays at Al-Wakrah instead, borrowing a stadium built for twenty thousand. It says something about the size of the operation that home advantage, in the literal sense, is not really theirs to use.

Against Al-Shamal the games stop being about the table. The two have gone at each other often enough in promotion and relegation battles that the meetings carry their own weight, closer in feel to a fight for survival than a routine fixture between mid-table sides.

The closest they have come to a major cup came last, not first: beaten finalists in the 2023–24 QFA Cup, a run built on a squad more used to grinding through the Second Division than chasing silverware in Doha's bigger competitions. A new crest went up in May 2023, an oryx replacing what came before — a small change for a club that has changed its name once already and rebuilt itself from the bottom division six times over.
