The 9 July Stadium in Misrata holds 10,000. It is where the club has played out most of its history.
The team started life in 1944 as The Workers Club, and spent its next three decades being renamed on a schedule that reads almost like a list of local politics: Al-Islah within a year, then Al-Arremal, then Al-Ahly Misrata, before settling on Asswehly in 1972.
For most of its life the club's success came from below the top flight. Twelve Libyan Second Division titles, spread from 1965 through 1996, describe a team that kept climbing and kept getting pushed back down, never quite breaking through nationally. Two Libyan Cup final defeats, in 1993–94 and 1999–2000, fit the same pattern. Then, in 2025–26, Asswehly won the Libyan Premier League outright — the first club from outside Tripoli to take the title since the competition began in 1963.
Among those who passed through recently, Moroccan winger Hamza El Janati arrived in February 2025 and was gone again within the year, one of several short stays that have marked the squad's recent turnover. Longer remembered locally are the Libyan internationals who came through the club's own ranks, among them Abdulmunem Akasha, a name tied to Asswehly rather than to any passing transfer window.
